Train Ride/Museum Information
Take a memorable, seven-mile, 50-minute round-trip ride on a former branch line of the Chicago & North Western Railway through the scenic Baraboo Hills. Passengers ride in restored steel coaches built in 1915. An authentically-attired conductor will call "all aboard!" before the train leaves from an historic wooden depot built in 1894. At the end of the line, passengers may detrain to get a look inside the cab of the locomotive from a viewing platform. Train fare includes admission to our Coach Shed filled with restored wooden passenger, freight cars and displays from the turn of the century.

See 1903-built Copper Range coach #60. The car has received two awards for its 8-year all-volunteer restoration. The coach was used in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan for many years to carry children to school. You can also see Copper Range locomotive #29, presently under restoration, which pulled #60 more than 50 years ago, and newly painted steam locomotives Soo #2645 and GB&W #49.

A display at the end of the line at Quartzite Lake explains how a steam locomotive and diesel locomotive work, and presents the history of the old quartzite quarry there--the reason for the railroad's construction to the end of the museum's rail line in 1917.
