Cover photo: This August 16, 2011 aerial view of Mid-Continent Railway Museum's North Freedom yard showcases the impressive collection that the museum and its members have acquired. Only the most devoted museum visitors make it all the way to the south end of the property. The collection's growth over the years has in fact presented operational problems from the very beginning when the rail line was a single track except for a passing track at Quartzite Lake. Storage tracks have been added over the years at just a fast enough pace to store the rolling stock on hand. While space always seems to be found, retrieving a car from one of hte buildings often involves complex switching maneuvers that use every last foot of available storage space. While adding a Coach Shed #2 remains as a long-term plan, adding another yard display track near the freight house to ease crowding is on the Operations Department's nearer-term wish list.
