Norwood's Knoxville City Directory for 1885 shows

"Southern Car Work - E.T. Va&Ga. R.R. track, west of depot. Organized June 1, 1881. Capital, $80,000. G.W. COLWELL, presient; R.Z. ROBERTS, secretary and treasurer; R.L. LOTT, vice-president and manager."

Fort Wayne Daily Gazette for 4 June 1881 shows

"KNOXVILLE, TENN., June 3 -- The Southern Car Works were to-day organized, with a capital stock of $100,000. The works will be in operation in sixty days, and will employ 200 mechanics. The company already has orders for a year's work."
