Cupola Caboose, D&IR, 1906
The #C-183 was built by the Duluth & Iron Range in 1906 at their home shops at Two Harbors as D&IR #83. In 1938, D&IR was merged into the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range. The car was renumbered to DM&IR #C-183. It was used mainly between Two Harbors to Tower and Ely in the Vermilion iron range and features a steel underframe and center sill to withstand the heavy buff forces when used in pusher and ore service. This car is unique in design to the Missabe, as the cupola is positioned at the end of the carbody, thereby allowing more interior space. In 1980, the car was sold to a private individual and moved to Elroy, Wisconsin. It was sold again in 1985 and moved to North Freedom where today it is used for bunk facilities.
